MAKING THE WORLD SMELL BETTER, ONE PERSON AT A TIME

A Conversation with Karen Dubin, Founder of Sniffapalooza

Some people remember their lives through photographs. Karen Dubin remembers hers through fragrance.

The Beginning: Hotel Soaps, European Travel, and a Very Smart Grandmother

"I can clock it to the day," Dubin laughs when asked where her fragrance obsession began.

She was four years old when her grandmother Rose returned from Europe carrying hotel soaps gathered from legendary properties including the Ritz in Paris and London's Savoy and Connaught hotels. Dubin kept them in a shoebox, repeatedly opening it to smell them again and again.

"It wasn't just the aromas—I loved the graphics, the wrappers, the colors."

Recognizing something special, her grandmother began bringing back miniature perfumes: Carven Ma Griffe, Chanel No. 5, Joy by Jean Patou, Diorissimo, and Tweed by Lentheric.

"They lived on my dresser like treasures."

By age six, she purchased her first fragrance herself: Lanvin Arpège.

"Probably too sophisticated for a child—but I didn't know that. I only knew how it made me feel."

Karen Dubin and Karen Adams, Co-founders, SNIFFAPALOOZA, explore the world of fine fragrance informing and illuminating and inviting all who want to delve deeper into the magical, mystical world of perfumery.

Before Communities Had Names

Dubin traces every major moment in her life through scent.

"I think with my nose."

That philosophy eventually led her to early fragrance message boards and communities, including Makeup Alley. In 2002, she invited fellow fragrance enthusiasts she met online to gather in person. That gathering became Sniffapalooza.

Meet Karen Dubin—founder and CEO of Sniffapalooza, the international live-event organization for fragrance enthusiasts. Founded in 2002 and joined by partner Karen Adams in 2004, Sniffapalooza has evolved into what is today the world's largest fragrance-focused live experience community—a muse for fragrance lovers and a powerful marketing force within the fragrance industry—dedicated to celebrating perfume as art and perfumers as artists. A global community of more than 500,000 friends.

A Home for Fragrance Lovers

"The philosophy has always been simple," says Dubin. "We celebrate perfumers as artists."

That means exploring fragrance from the first sketch on a cocktail napkin through the finished fragrance—and creating opportunities for enthusiasts, collectors, creators, and newcomers to learn together.

"You don't need expertise. You just need curiosity."

The organization's live programming—immersive events, pairing experiences, masterclasses, and international travel experiences—remains central to its identity.

"We built our community around being together in real life."

Changing How People Wear Fragrance

One of Sniffapalooza's most enduring contributions may be helping normalize what Dubin calls "fragrance wardrobing." Rather than owning a single signature scent, fragrance lovers build collections based on mood, season, occasion, and identity.

"We wanted people to feel free to experiment."

That freedom—crossing categories, genders, moods, and occasions—continues shaping how consumers approach fragrance today.

The Future Still Smells Good

For all the changes in fragrance and media, Dubin's mission has remained remarkably consistent.

"We've never moved away from our original vision: educate, inspire, and share beauty."

Her motto remains unchanged:

"Making the world smell better, one person at a time."
